    AT A GLANCE

You’ll find Mauritius off the southeast coast of Africa and just east of Madagascar. Independent since the late ‘60s, it runs a stable democracy, attracting plenty of overseas investment. As a result, Mauritius has one of the highest per capita incomes in Africa. Port Louis is its capital, its currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR) and the official language is English.

Since it became independent, Mauritians have experienced a better life expectancy, lower rates of infant mortality, better income distribution, and improved infrastructure. This is thanks to an astonishing annual growth of between 5% and 6% due to its development from a low-income economy mainly based on agriculture to a middle-income diversified economy.

Mauritius now has well established financial services, tourism industry, textiles and apparel production, and is developing its fish processing, ICT, property development and hospitality industries.

Mauritius has very favourable rankings in the Ease of Doing Business scale – coming in at 1st and 20th in Africa and Worldwide respectively.
