    AT A GLANCE

Spain is a country in the Southwest of Europe. It’s a member of the European Union (EU) and is made up of 17 autonomous communities and two autonomous cities, with varying degrees of devolved power.

Its capital city is Madrid, and the euro (EUR) is Spain’s official currency. Spanish – also known as Castilian – is the country-wide official language. But there are also several co-official languages for particular communities, including Basque and Catalan, among others.

The Spanish economy was not spared by the global pandemic, suffering a drop of 10% in gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020. But it is now on the road to recovery, with the reintroduction of tourism – a sector that occupies a significant portion of Spain’s economy.
